Mailbox Discount to be Discountinued Soon - (20080315)
As you know by now, the board originally announced a one-time instant rebate to each homeowner who orders a new mailbox by March 31, 2008. We are going to extend the rebate period untl April 30th. We've had an overwhelming response to the new mailbox and well over half the homeowners have one already installed or on order.
This is the perfect time to get yours on order before you forget and the rebate offer lapses. We already know that the price from our vendor has gone up due to the cost of materials and transportation. Even though we've absorbed that price increase by increasing the rebate, we won't be able to do that after April. Expect the new full price mailbox to be around $400.

2007 HO HO HO Award Winner - (20071230)
On an unusually warm December Sunday evening, the HO HO HO Award Committee perused the brightly lit neighborhood searching for that one special house that desrved the distinction of the best lit house in Sheffield. There were an unusually large number of beautifully lit and decorated houses this year. Here is this year's winner, 513 Welton Ct. The committee noted that Welton Ct had an unusually high percentage of houses that were decorated.
We've also included a few pictures of runners up. There were additional houses worthy of mention here that just didn't happen to be lit the night the pictures were taken.

New Mailbox Design Approved - (20070426)
At the April 26, 2007 General Membership meeting of the Homeowners Association, the Board of Directors announced the approval of a new mailbox design. It has been over a year since the board has been able to locate a vendor to manufacture the old wood mailboxes to the approved design. In light of this, and the deteriorating nature of many of the mailboxes in the neighborhood, the Board moved to find a replacement.
The new mailboxes are made from the same materials and design elements as the street signs and will be provided by the same vendor. Just like the street signs, the new mailboxes will be powder coated rather than painted to make the expected life about 10 to 12 years with minimal maintenance.
Every homeowner is encouraged to acquire a new mailbox. To promote rapid adoption, the board has approved a one-time $100 instant rebate to each homeowner who orders a new mailbox by March 31, 2008. For this first year, the HOA, with the help of McGarr and Associates, will take new orders until there are at least ten at once. An order will be placed with the supplier who will deliver and install the new mailboxes approximately 3 to 4 weeks later. The existing one will be removed and disposed of. No one is required to take advantage of the rebate, but no new wooden mailboxes of any design will be approved. New mailboxes are $325.50 plus tax and include installation. The rebate is applied after the tax calculation for a total of $255.61.

New Window Vendor - (20040527)
We have identified an additional window glass vendor who has expressed their interest in providing Sheffield homeowners with a discounted price for replacement windows. Additionally, he is giving us a 10-year guarantee, where Phillips only gave 5 years originally.
Sheffield homeowners can call Bill Evans of Evans Glass Company at 361-8788. Be sure to identify yourself as a Sheffield homeowner.
Remember that all exterior changes requires approval including new or replacment windows.
We have Elane Harris to thank for researching this for us. She has spoken to two Sheffield homeowners who both have used Evans Glass to replace windows and they were pleased with the work.

Voice Mail Hotline No Longer Available - (20041126)
For the last four years we have been able to take advantage of a free voice mail hotline service so that you, our neighbors, could communicate with the board. Unfortunately, this service is no longer available to us for free. It was used rather infrequently, and more people have access to email now, so unless there is strong objection we will not use your funds to buy this service.

Annual Meeting Announced - (20050321)
The Annual Homeowners meeting will be Thursday, April 21, 6:30 PM. We'll meet at the Harpeth Valley Elementary School Cafeteria this year, not Bellevue Middle as we have in the past. Mark your calendar now and make plans to attend. If you can not attend, be sure to take a signed proxy to a Board member or to a neighbor who will be attending to have your vote count toward our quorum. Each meeting costs us roughly the annual dues of one Sheffield household, so it's important that we reach our quorum of 50% of the homeowners either live or by proxy. Without a quorum, we would need to reschedule the meeting and double its cost. The person showing up with the most proxies will get a gift certificate to Lowe's or Home Depot and another gift certificate will be raffled off at the meeting to those attending.

New Update - (20050115 5:05 pm)
Sorry for so many updates. One of our neighbors saw many Nashville Gas trucks at the driving range on old Harding and stopped to talk to them. This is apprently "command central." They were just dispatching two trucks to Sheffield to start restoring gas service at 5pm. They emphasized that they will not restore gas to your residence if you are not home.
Update - (20050115 1:55 pm)
I just spoke to a Nashville Gas service man walking through the neighborhood turning off the meter valves near Claytie and River Fork. He said they are doing our whole section up to Poplar Creek - sounds like Sheffield, Hanover Park and River Park. Then this evening (Saturday) starting about 5 or 6 pm they will be coming back through turning on individual homes. They have to spend 20 to 30 minutes at each place to bleed the lines and make sure all safety valves work, then they will relight pilot lights. You have to be home to let them in for them to restore service. I've heard from other residents that they have been in the neighborhood since before noon turning off meters. It is hard to say when we will all be visited. He said that if you leave a phone number on your door if you leave, they will call and reschedule. He seemed to imply that if they were still nearby, they would get back to you before they left the area.
Natural Gas Not Available in Bellevue - (20050114)
This morning many Sheffield residents noticed that their houses were colder than usual and their hot water didn't seem to last as long. A few good neighbors called around to spread the word that there had been problems with a gas main near Nine Mile Hill (near the JCC) and that no one in Bellevue had natural gas. A call to Nashville Gas about 8am confirmed the problem and they did not have an estimated time for restoration. We were informed that they had plans to send people throughout the affected area to assist residents with restarting their gas appliances once the problem was corrected. Later in the afternoon, rumors spread that the problem had been corrected, but that residents may not have gas until as late as Monday due to the time it would take to repressurize the system.
The Tennessean reports that the problem was caused by a landslide around 4am. Approximately 3,000 residents are affected.
Another call to Nashville Gas just before 5pm confirmed that service may take all weekend to restore. The gasline break has been repaired and there is adequate pressure in the system, but safety requirements prevent simply turning service back on. Since it's possible that gas valves may not have automatically closed when service was lost, or residents may have inadvertantly left stove top burners open, service restoration requires a personal visit from Nashville Gas personnel. Apparently individual meters at all residences were turned off to prevent the possibility of gas leaking through open valves. This process is likely to take all weekend.
Nashville Gas is referring calls requesting information to their Emergency Gas Leak department. This seems to me to have the potential of clogging up the phone lines making it more difficult for people to report a real emergency. Use your best judgement in making inquiries of your own.

Found Cockatiel - (20040709)
One of the contractors working @ 8020 Claytie Circle found a cockatiel wandering the street. One of our neighbors took it to a lady who has several cockatiels, who had an appropriate cage, food, and knowledge to care for it. They are kind of finicky birds, so it will be well cared for until someone claims it. Please call if it belongs to you – 673-8495.
Thanks, Melanie Dowling

Pond Fountain - May 25, 2004
The new pond fountain has been running beautifully for several weeks now, but it has recently started tripping the circuit breaker. Daniel Moore of Viking, who installed the fountain, and their electrician have been in touch with the manufacturer. All parties believe it is a warranty issue and not a problem with the installation. Daniel will be onsite today to pull the fountain from the pond and determine if it can be easily repaired, which he feels is unlikely, or have the manufacturer immediately ship us out a new replacement.

The Pool is Open - May 14, 2004
The pool is open for swimming and is properly permitted by Metro. The water is safe. There are cracks in the decking that are keeping the sign from coming down. Langley & Taylor has been given the OK to repair the cracks but the weather of the past week and a half has not cooperated.

Chris Zimmer Fund - (20040503)
As many of you may know, Chris Zimmer, age 12 of Somerset Drive, was in a serious automobile accident in January that now has him in intense physical, occupational and speech therapies. Although he is progressing, Chris and his family are in for long term rehabilitation and their insurance resources are running out.
We feel that it is part of being a good neighbor to help out as best we can. In that spirit, we have set up a Fund for contributions 100% of which will go to the family. Donations can be made at any SunTrust Bank. Checks should be made payable to "FBO (For the benefit of) Chris Zimmer."
Chris' father Bruce tells us, "We're so proud of Chris and his attitude. He's working so hard to get better. He's come a long way but he still his a long way to go. Please continue to keep him and us in your prayers, and we'll continue to do likewise for you and yours. Faith and determination have gotten him (and us) this far, and that same faith will take him (us) even further. Thanks so much for all that you have done. We've been blessed."
Update - (20040609)
The first check is about to be cut from this account to the Zimmers. Your generosity is inspiring. The account is still open if you would like to contribute if you haven't already.
